Maintenance is the heart of what Hilbrands does. Most landscape companies can list mowing, bed care, pruning, irrigation, fertilization, seasonal color, and snow removal. But what matters is how those services are carried out, and how well the crew understands the property beneath them. Over time, we learn the soil, shade, drainage, timing, and seasonal needs that allow a property to be cared for with greater precision each year.
Lawn Care & Mowing
The difference between a mowed lawn and a kept lawn is in the small decisions. Mow height that follows the season — taller in heat, shorter as growth slows. Stripe direction that varies week to week so the grass doesn't develop a grain and the soil stays even underfoot. Edges cut clean against beds and walks. Corners trimmed because the schedule is built around the property, not the route.
Plant & Bed Care
Often, properties get their landscaping installed by one company and maintained by another. The installation gets the attention; the maintenance gets whoever shows up cheapest. The plants pay for it.
We don't plant every bed we maintain — but once it's in, we know how to keep it. Pruning at the right times of year for each plant type. Weeding before things go to seed. Mulching at the right depth, and only after proper prep has been completed. Watching what's flowering, what's dormant, and what's quietly preparing for the next bloom.
Knowing a bed across years is what lets us notice when something looks off — before anyone else would.
Fertilization & Weed Control
Green is easy. Healthy is different. Our fertilization and weed control programs are built around proper timing, quality materials, and careful observation of the turf itself. We apply professional products precisely, not as a blanket routine, and we watch for the conditions that affect the lawn throughout the season: weed pressure, fungus, drought stress, soil conditions, and overall plant health. The goal is not just a quick green-up. It is turf that stays healthy, resilient, and well kept through the entire season.
Irrigation Management
Spring startup. Summer tuning. Fall winterization. A good irrigation system is not set once and forgotten. It is watched, adjusted, and understood through the season. Because our crews are on the property every week, they see what the irrigation clocks cannot — a dry bed, a stuck zone, a broken head, turf beginning to stress, or shade keeping one area wet long after another has dried. Most landscapes do not need more water. They need the right water, in the right place, at the right time.
Seasonal Color & Flowers
Spring color, summer plantings, fall mums, and seasonal décor. From front porches, walkways, and window boxes to neighborhood and community entrances, we create the planters and flower arrangements that mark the season and welcome people to the property. Each one is chosen for its light, scale, setting, and timing — composed one at a time, uniquely for the place it belongs, with no template and no shortcuts in the choosing.
Snow & Ice Removal
Driveways, walkways, private roads, and lots cleared through West Michigan winters. Priced by the season, not the storm, so clients can move through winter without wondering what each snowfall will cost. Before the day begins, our crews clear the routes people rely on, manage ice where needed, and pay attention to the details that separate clean winter service from a rushed pass through the property.
DESIGN & INSTALLATION
When a property is ready for something more.
Most of our landscape work begins with a property we already care for. A bed needs renewal. A planting has outgrown its place. An entrance could be more welcoming. Because we know the property, the recommendations are specific, measured, and built to belong.
Landscape Enhancements
Enhancement work is different from new construction. It begins with what is already there: the home, the architecture, the mature plantings, the light, the soil, the drainage, and the way the property is used through the year.
We handle new plantings, bed redesigns, entry improvements, seasonal color, lighting, drainage corrections, and hardscape additions for properties that need thoughtful change. Sometimes the work is small. Sometimes it is phased over several seasons. The goal is the same: improvements that settle in naturally, age gracefully, and feel as though they have always belonged.
